When I was working as a cocktail waitress in Las Vegas as part of my research for "Nine Lives," I ended up serving drinks at the after-rodeo parties during the National Finals Rodeo. The whole scene of cowboys in Vegas was so strange and alien, I wanted to go back and cover the whole thing as a sporting event. Outside magazine sent me to do just that the following year.
